Samsung has just lost the top spot in global smartphone shipment sales for the first time in over a decade. And, it got beat by Apple in terms of smartphones shipped. This is the first time since 2010 that the Californian giant is the top phone manufacturer. Also, it was the only smartphone maker in the top 3 to record growth in 2023. Here’s more on the report by IDC. According to IDC estimates, preliminary data for smartphone shipments shows that the overall smartphone market saw a 3.2% decline.

The Cupertino company shipped 234.6 million smartphones for a market share of 20.1%. Meanwhile, Samsung only managed 226.6 million shipments, taking 19.4% of the pie. In third was Xiaomi, with 145.9 million units shipped and a 12.5% market share. Followed by Oppo, with 103.1 million units shipped and 8.8% of the market. Furthermore, Transsion, the Chinese manufacturer of Itel, Tecno, and Infinix-branded phones, with 94.9 million units, shipped for an 8.1% share.

IDC confirms: Apple was king of the smartphone market in 2023

This is the first time Apple has led the list after such a long time, and it is thanks to a breakaway performance in 2023 led by the iPhone 15 family. Naturally, IDC also shared the data for the fourth quarter of 2023, which showed Xiaomi gaining back its footing. The brand stood third with a growth of 22.7% compared to its fourth quarter in 2022. Besides, Apple was No.1 with 80.5 million shipments and a 24.7% market share. Moreover, Samsung managed 53 million units shipped for 16.3% of the market. As we can see, Apple kept a gap of 80.5 million units. Especially, the fourth quarter results also showed Oppo losing its spot in the top 5. In detail, Transsion took its spot at number 4 with a surprising 68.6% growth compared to the same quarter in 2022. In the meantime, Vivo took the 5th spot with a slight 5.5% growth and 7.4% overall share in the market.
